Many of us may or may not have heard about The Institute of Marine Engineers India [IME(I)] but all of us would have thought of either benefiting or giving back to our fraternity, depending on what stage of our career we are in. In this regards, Sea and Beyond is doing a webinar with IME(I) and the key points covered in the webinar will be:
- Origins and vision of India Institute of Marine Engineers (India)
- A broad overview of how it is governed and where all is it affiliated to
- Which all government bodies is IME(I) partnered and how do we support them
- How is IME(I) helping the cause of seafarers, especially marine engineers
- Who all can become the member of IME(I). Is it open to non-mariner engineers as well?
- What are the various chapters of IME(I)?
- How can you enroll and the benefits?

About IME(I):
The Institute of Marine Engineers (India) [IME(I)] is a premier professional body representing marine engineering professionals in India. Established as an independent national institute on October 29, 1977.
IME(I) is dedicated to promoting the scientific development of marine engineering in all its branches. It facilitates the exchange of ideas among marine engineers, publishes relevant information, upholds professional standards, collaborates with educational institutions, and maintains a benevolence fund to support members in need.
The institute boasts a robust membership base, comprising approximately 13,200 active members, including 4,900 corporate members. It operates through 8 branches across India, with the Mumbai branch located at Nariman Point.
The webinar would consist of the following:
- A 30-35 minute presentation by Speaker Name where in they would talk about IME(I).
- 20-25 minutes of Q&A wherein the presenters would take questions
- A quick feedback survey about the webinar
About the Speakers
Mr. Rajeev Nayyer
President IME(I),A seasoned maritime professional with a distinguished career spanning over four decades, Mr. Rajeev Nayyer Sir is a Fellow Member and the current President of the Institute of Marine Engineers (India) [IME(I)].
A marine engineer from the 1983–87 batch of DMET, he began his seafaring career with Great Eastern Shipping (GESCO), rising to the rank of Chief Engineer before transitioning ashore in 1995. In 2000, he joined Essar to lead their LNG project, subsequently taking on key roles across technical operations, newbuilding, sales & purchase, quality & safety, and ultimately heading their oilfield business as CEO.
After parting ways with Essar in November 2020, he established himself as an independent maritime consultant, leveraging his vast industry experience to provide expert guidance across the maritime and energy sectors.
Shailesh B. Desai
Member - IME(I), Alumnus DMET, Former Marine Engineer,Shailesh B. Desai is a seasoned maritime professional and an alumnus of DMET (1979-83). He began his career at sea, sailing as a Second Engineer, before transitioning ashore to entrepreneurship. Along with four batchmates, he promoted C-MET ENGINEERING INDIA PVT. LTD., a company specializing in ship repairs, with a strong focus on hydraulics, marine engines, auxiliary machinery, and maneuvering systems. His expertise and industry experience have been instrumental in delivering high-quality engineering solutions to the maritime sector.
Dr. Sanjeev S Vakil
Hon. Chairman of Chennai Branch - IME(I), Founder and CEO of HIMT Group of Institutes,Dr. Sanjeev S. Vakil is the Founder & CEO of HIMT Group of Institutes, India's largest maritime training institute. A Mechanical Engineering graduate (1990), he began his maritime career in 1991, rising to Chief Engineer within five years. In 1998, he established HIMT, which now operates five campuses across Chennai and Vizag. He is the first marine engineer globally to receive a Fellowship from the Nautical Institute, UK, and has won 25+ national and international awards. A key figure in maritime education, he is actively involved in IMEI, MTG, and industry symposiums. His Ph.D. research on Maritime Education and Autonomous Ships was conferred in 2023 at IMU's convocation, attended by the President of India.
