Job Description

We are seeking a Compliance Analyst to conduct first-line financial crime checks across regulated and unregulated business units. The role involves customer and counterparty due diligence, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring, fraud investigations and banking partner information requests. The successful candidate will ensure decisions are documented clearly and handled in line with established policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct KYC and KYB checks during onboarding and periodic reviews, including identity, beneficial ownership, source of funds and nature of business.
  • Perform enhanced due diligence for higher-risk relationships and politically exposed persons (PEPs).
  • Screen customers, counterparties, payments, vessels and cargo against sanctions, PEP and adverse media lists.
  • Investigate potential screening matches and hold payments where required until concerns are resolved.
  • Review transaction monitoring alerts, assess activity against customer profiles and document decisions.
  • Investigate card and transfer fraud, including account takeover and authorised push payment (APP) scams.
  • Support fraud reporting, refund approvals, chargebacks and fund recovery.
  • Respond accurately and promptly to information requests from banking partners.
  • Escalate suspected money laundering, terrorist financing, sanctions breaches or fraud to the MLRO through internal suspicious activity reporting, while avoiding tipping off.
  • Maintain accurate case records, screening decisions, alert outcomes and investigation documentation.
  • Identify emerging financial crime patterns, recurring false positives and gaps in controls, and raise them with management.

Requirements

  • Degree in Finance, Law, Business or a related discipline preferred; relevant experience in a regulated financial services firm may also be considered.
  • 3–5 years of experience in financial crime covering KYC/KYB, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring or fraud.
  • Strong attention to detail, sound judgement, clear written communication and discretion.
  • Ability to manage workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in a firm regulated in the UK, Portugal or elsewhere in Europe is desirable but not essential.
  • Exposure to payments, e-money, banking or fintech is preferred.
  • Maritime, shipping or cross-border payments experience is an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

ICA, ACAMS or an equivalent financial crime qualification.
