Job Description


A Port Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing end-to-end vessel and cargo operations at the port, ensuring smooth berthing, loading and discharge activities, efficient cargo movement, compliance, and timely coordination with clients, vessels, port authorities, and service providers.

Role Overview

The role involves managing daily port operations, monitoring vessel and cargo productivity, coordinating multiple stakeholders, ensuring documentation and regulatory compliance, and resolving operational issues. The position also supports stock monitoring, cost control, vendor coordination, reporting, and identifying opportunities to enhance service offerings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise vessel operations including berthing coordination, cargo loading/discharge, NOR handling, berthing movements, and client liaison.
  • Monitor Statement of Facts (SOF) and ensure compliance with applicable charter party terms.
  • Coordinate with vessel Masters, agents, surveyors, CHA, customs, weighbridge operators, and transport contractors.
  • Monitor daily loading/discharge rates, minimize operational delays, and ensure productivity targets are achieved.
  • Ensure cargo integrity, proper coverage, safe handling, and compliance with port and environmental regulations.
  • Prepare daily operational reports, cargo documentation, and laytime calculations.
  • Resolve operational issues, respond to client queries, and escalate critical matters to senior management.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients and operational stakeholders through timely updates and reporting.
  • Gather client feedback and support continuous improvement in service standards.
  • Identify cross-selling opportunities across weighbridge, customs clearance, transportation, rake handling, and related port services.
  • Monitor physical and documented stock/storage levels and support audits to identify discrepancies or potential manipulation.
  • Ensure timely completion of gate passes, security clearances, SOF sign-offs, surveyor appointments, and other operational documentation.
  • Liaise with port authorities and ensure compliance with ISPS and applicable security requirements.
  • Resolve port entry, access, and logistics-related constraints.
  • Coordinate with internal teams for purchase order approvals, cost control, manpower planning, and vendor management.
  • Maintain port registers, operational checklists, dashboards, and related records.
  • Handle Port EBS, rake handling, gate pass procedures, and related operational activities.
  • Coordinate HMC handling, DPA/port payments, refunds, and associated reporting.

Requirements

  • Experience in port operations, vessel operations, cargo handling, shipping, logistics, or a related maritime environment.
  • Strong understanding of vessel berthing, loading/discharge, cargo movement, SOF, NOR, and laytime processes.
  • Knowledge of port documentation, customs, gate pass procedures, rake handling, and port-related compliance.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with vessel Masters, agents, surveyors, clients, port authorities, transporters, and internal teams.
  • Strong operational problem-solving and stakeholder management skills.
  • Good understanding of ISPS and port safety and security requirements.
  • Strong reporting, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple operational activities in a time-sensitive port environment.
