Job Description


The Marine Superintendent will be responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of assigned container, bulk, and chemical vessels. The role involves providing marine and regulatory guidance to Masters and vessel teams, monitoring vessel performance, supporting audits and inspections, conducting vessel visits, and coordinating safety, operational, and emergency response activities.

The role requires a strong seagoing background and the ability to provide shore-based operational support across container, bulk, and chemical vessel operations. The Marine Superintendent will work closely with vessel teams and internal departments to maintain high standards of safety, compliance, cargo operations, navigation, and overall vessel performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day marine operations of assigned container, bulk, and chemical vessels.
  • Ensure safe, compliant, and efficient vessel operations in accordance with applicable maritime regulations and company procedures.
  • Provide nautical and regulatory guidance to Masters and vessel teams on navigation, cargo operations, mooring, and operational safety.
  • Monitor vessel performance and relevant operational KPIs.
  • Support navigation, cargo handling, cargo securing, lashing, mooring, and port operations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Cargo Securing Manual and IMDG requirements.
  • Monitor risks related to cargo handling, container loss, lashing failures, misdeclared cargo, and other operational hazards.
  • For chemical vessels, support safe cargo handling, tank operations, cargo compatibility, and applicable chemical tanker safety requirements.
  • For bulk vessels, support safe cargo operations, cargo securing, loading/discharging, stability, and port operations.
  • Follow up on stevedore damage reports and operational deficiencies.
  • Monitor vessel loading, stability, and cargo plans as applicable to vessel type.
  • Monitor reefer container operations where applicable.
  • Support maintenance and upkeep of relevant vessel operational software and systems.
  • Conduct marine visits and internal audits.
  • Support PSC, Flag State, charterer, customer, and other inspections.
  • Participate in incident investigations, root-cause analysis, risk assessments, and corrective actions.
  • Support Management of Change (MOC) and operational risk assessment processes.
  • Participate in emergency response activities and provide shore-based support to vessels during emergencies.
  • Support vessel training initiatives and continuous improvement programmes.
  • Coordinate with Crewing, Business Development, Quality, Technical, and other internal teams to support vessel operations.
  • Contribute to management reviews and improvement of marine operational standards.

Requirements

  • Valid Class 1 Certificate of Competency (Master Mariner).
  • Significant seagoing experience, preferably as Master or Chief Officer.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant shore-based Marine Superintendent experience preferred.
  • For Senior Marine Superintendent positions, 2+ years of shore-based Marine Superintendent experience will be advantageous.
  • Experience with container, bulk, or chemical vessels.
  • Strong knowledge of ISM, MLC, ISPS, SOLAS, and MARPOL requirements.
  • Relevant knowledge of cargo operations, vessel safety, navigation, mooring, and stability.
  • Experience with IMDG and cargo securing/lashing systems for container operations.
  • Understanding of chemical tanker and bulk carrier operational requirements will be advantageous.
  • Experience supporting audits, inspections, incident investigations, and emergency response.
  • Good understanding of customer vetting and vessel clearance requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with Masters, vessel teams, and multiple shore-based departments.
  • Familiarity with safety management systems, training, risk assessments, and continuous improvement.
