Job Description

The Vessel Performance Analyst will support the Technical Performance team by developing and maintaining vessel performance models, ensuring the quality of performance data, and converting complex maritime data into clear insights for Performance, Chartering, and Operations teams. The role combines naval architecture, hydrodynamics, vessel performance, and data analytics to support practical fleet-wide decisions.

Role Overview

The role focuses on vessel speed-power and fuel-consumption modelling, hull and propeller performance monitoring, maritime data quality, anomaly detection, dashboards, and voyage optimisation. The analyst will work with vessel, weather, sensor, and voyage data to identify performance trends and provide decision-ready recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, calibrate, and maintain speed-power and fuel-consumption models for individual vessels and vessel classes.
  • Validate model outputs and clearly identify limitations or situations where results cannot be relied upon.
  • Develop and refine reference and baseline performance curves.
  • Apply recognised weather and sea-state correction methods to vessel performance models.
  • Monitor hull and propeller performance, including fouling penalties, speed loss, drydock performance, and coating effectiveness.
  • Manage and validate performance inputs including noon reports, high-frequency sensor data, weather hindcast, and voyage data.
  • Develop anomaly-detection, data-gap handling, and validation rules.
  • Define and document data standards and quality controls for downstream systems.
  • Investigate discrepancies between data sources and work with vessels, Operations, and IT teams to identify root causes.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards covering hull performance, fuel efficiency, emissions compliance, and voyage performance.
  • Convert technical analysis into clear recommendations for Performance, Chartering, Operations, and senior stakeholders.
  • Support voyage optimisation workflows and assess optimisation outputs.
  • Support the onboarding and integration of vessel performance and voyage optimisation platforms.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in vessel performance modelling, analytics, and data quality.

Requirements

  • Degree in Naval Architecture or a closely related discipline is required.
  • Ocean Engineering with strong hydrodynamics exposure may also be considered.
  • 2–5 years of experience in vessel performance, ship performance monitoring, or a comparable maritime analytics role preferred.
  • Strong understanding of ship resistance, propulsion, speed-power relationships, and fuel-consumption behaviour.
  • Understanding of how operational and environmental factors influence vessel performance.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime performance data and common quality issues affecting noon reports, sensor feeds, weather, and voyage data.
  • Hands-on experience with Python or an equivalent programming language, SQL, and dashboarding tools.
  • Experience with vessel performance, voyage optimisation, weather routing, or voyage management platforms.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 19030, ISO 15016, and related vessel-performance standards and regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to question unreliable data or model outputs and investigate underlying causes.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience with dry bulk fleets and their operational profiles.
  • Knowledge of weather correction methods, including wind resistance, wave-added resistance, and normalisation approaches.
  • Exposure to statistical or machine-learning techniques for performance modelling.
  • Experience developing lightweight analytical applications, Python applications, or web dashboards.
  • Understanding of hull coating and grooming economics.
  • Knowledge of drydock planning and hull performance management.
  • Experience supporting voyage optimisation and fuel-efficiency initiatives.

Key Performance Areas

  • Accuracy and reliability of vessel performance models.
  • Quality and integrity of performance data.
  • Effective identification of vessel performance anomalies.
  • Accuracy of weather and sea-state corrections.
  • Hull and propeller performance monitoring.
  • Quality of dashboards and performance reporting.
  • Actionability of recommendations provided to commercial and operational teams.
  • Successful integration and use of performance and voyage optimisation platforms.

About the Role

This position is suited to professionals with a background in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Hydrodynamics, or Maritime Analytics who are interested in applying technical and analytical skills to real-world vessel performance. The role combines ship-performance modelling, maritime data, programming, and operational analysis to support fuel efficiency, fleet performance, and voyage optimisation.
