Job Description


The Vessel Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day technical, operational, and budgetary management of assigned bulk and container vessels. The role will ensure safe, compliant, reliable, and cost-effective vessel performance while coordinating closely with shipboard teams, owners, charterers, technical departments, HSEQ teams, and other shore-based stakeholders.

The Vessel Manager will act as the primary link between the vessel and shore office, overseeing vessel performance, technical issues, maintenance, dry dockings, repairs, inspections, audits, budgets, procurement, and regulatory compliance. The role will also support emergency response, continuous improvement, and overall fleet performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day technical and operational performance of assigned bulk and container vessels.
  • Ensure vessels operate safely and efficiently in accordance with ISM, ISPS, MLC, ISO, Flag State, Class, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Act as the primary point of contact between shipboard management and shore-based support teams.
  • Monitor Class, Flag State, Port State Control, and third-party inspections and ensure timely closure of deficiencies.
  • Ensure vessel certification and audit readiness.
  • Support crew selection, senior officer performance evaluation, and crew welfare.
  • Develop, monitor, and control annual vessel operating budgets.
  • Monitor vessel costs, procurement activities, invoice approvals, and insurance-related matters.
  • Coordinate dry dockings, major repairs, modifications, and other vessel projects.
  • Ensure dry-docking activities meet agreed technical specifications, schedules, and budgets.
  • Support internal and external audits, inspections, vetting, and charterer inspections.
  • Follow up on audit and inspection findings and ensure timely corrective actions.
  • Participate in emergency response activities, drills, incident follow-up, and risk assessments.
  • Monitor safety, environmental, operational, and vessel performance KPIs.
  • Conduct regular vessel visits and monitor planned maintenance and outstanding deficiencies.
  • Prepare periodic vessel performance and operational reports.
  • Liaise with owners, charterers, vessel teams, and external stakeholders regarding vessel performance and operational matters.
  • Work closely with technical, marine, HSEQ, crewing, and procurement teams to improve vessel performance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and fleet-wide operational objectives.

Requirements

  • Higher education in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Marine Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Higher maritime education with relevant experience as a Chief Engineer will be preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant shore-based experience in a shipping or ship management environment.
  • Experience managing bulk or container vessels.
  • Prior sailing experience on container vessels is essential for container vessel assignments.
  • Strong knowledge of ISM, ISPS, MLC, SOLAS, MARPOL, Class, Flag State, and vessel vetting requirements.
  • Proven experience in vessel operations and multidisciplinary team coordination.
  • Experience with vessel budgeting, cost control, procurement, and maintenance planning.
  • Experience supporting dry dockings, repairs, modifications, audits, and inspections.
  • Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with owners, charterers, vessel teams, and internal departments.
