Job Description

The Vessel Performance Engineer will provide senior technical analysis of vessel performance from the Technical Performance team in Mumbai. The role requires strong sea-going engine-room experience to assess machinery and hull performance, investigate anomalies, analyse fuel consumption, and develop evidence-based conclusions that support operational and commercial decisions across the fleet.

The role combines marine engineering expertise with vessel performance analysis, technical investigations, speed trials, fuel-efficiency assessment, and performance data validation. The Vessel Performance Engineer will also contribute to AI-enabled performance tools, fleet studies, charter party performance discussions, and the development of junior technical talent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and quality-check technical conclusions, root-cause analyses, fuel-correction methods, and vessel performance calculations.
  • Monitor main engine and auxiliary engine performance trends using information provided by sailing staff.
  • Plan and conduct vessel speed trials to establish accurate baseline performance data.
  • Investigate unexplained increases in fuel consumption, vessel underperformance, and recurring technical issues.
  • Assess the impact of machinery condition, hull and propeller condition, weather, and operating practices on vessel performance.
  • Work with analytics teams to review and refine specific fuel oil consumption and power-correction methods.
  • Distinguish machinery and hull performance issues from weather effects and reporting errors.
  • Support the development and review of AI-enabled vessel performance, diagnostics, and voyage optimisation tools.
  • Present authorised technical positions during owner discussions and charter party performance disputes.
  • Conduct fleet performance studies and provide actionable feedback to commercial and operations teams.
  • Prepare and contribute to quarterly fleet-wide performance analysis.
  • Define requirements for fit-for-analysis data and validate noon reports.
  • Identify and escalate data quality issues to the relevant teams.
  • Mentor, cross-train, and review the work of assistant engineers across machinery, hull, and propulsion areas.

Requirements

  • Valid Class 1 Certificate of Competency.
  • Sea-going experience as a Second Engineer is required.
  • 8+ years of sea-going experience across main engine types such as MAN B&W, WinGD, or equivalent.
  • Strong practical understanding of shipboard machinery and propulsion systems.
  • Ability to assess engine condition, auxiliary machinery, hull and propeller condition, weather, and operating practices in relation to vessel performance and fuel consumption.
  • Strong analytical and technical report-writing skills.
  • Ability to assess fuel consumption, engine load, and machinery performance trends using limited or inconsistent operational data.
  • Confidence in explaining and defending technical conclusions to owners' technical representatives.
  • Previous shore-based vessel performance experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with voyage optimisation platforms and emissions regulations preferred.
  • Knowledge of hull coatings and energy-saving devices, including Mewis ducts and rotors, preferred.
  • Willingness to adopt new analytical methods and AI-enabled performance and diagnostics tools.

Key Performance Areas

  • Accuracy and quality of vessel performance analysis.
  • Identification and resolution of technical performance anomalies.
  • Fuel consumption and machinery performance analysis.
  • Quality of vessel performance data and reporting.
  • Accurate speed trial and baseline performance assessment.
  • Fleet-wide performance improvement and actionable recommendations.
  • Effective technical support for commercial and operational decisions.
  • Quality of technical conclusions in charter party performance matters.
  • Development and adoption of performance analytics and AI-enabled tools.

About the Role

This position is suited to experienced marine engineers with strong sea-going engine-room backgrounds who want to apply their technical expertise to vessel performance, fuel efficiency, and fleet analytics. The role offers significant exposure to technical investigations, commercial performance matters, advanced analytics, and emerging AI-enabled maritime technologies.
