Job Description


We are hiring an Operations Specialist – Dangerous Goods (DG) Desk for a leading shipping company in Chennai, India. This is an excellent opportunity for professionals seeking Dangerous Goods jobs, DG Cargo Specialist careers, Container Line Operations jobs, and Shipping Operations roles.

The role is responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient handling of dangerous goods shipments, with a strong focus on DG documentation, regulatory compliance, cargo classification, risk assessment, booking validation, and operational coordination.

Key Responsibilities:

Dangerous Goods Operations:

  • Review and validate DG declarations, IMO documentation, and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  • Ensure compliance with the IMDG Code, SOLAS requirements, CFR49, local regulations, and internal company policies
  • Verify DG classification, UN numbers, packing groups, and applicable packaging instructions
  • Approve or reject dangerous goods bookings based on compliance checks
  • Evaluate cargo segregation requirements and hazardous cargo compatibility
  • Coordinate with stowage planners to ensure safe vessel loading and cargo placement
  • Liaise with customers, vessels, ports, stevedores, and internal teams regarding DG requirements
  • Manage non-compliant shipments, discrepancies, and operational exceptions
  • Provide corrective recommendations and ensure timely resolution of DG-related issues
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of amendments and changes to dangerous goods regulations

Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Support incident prevention by enforcing DG safety and compliance protocols
  • Participate in root cause analysis of DG-related incidents
  • Monitor DG operational exceptions, compliance trends, and performance
  • Maintain accurate DG information and records in operational systems
  • Prepare reports relating to compliance, bookings, incidents, and operational performance
  • Support internal audits, external reviews, and regulatory inspections

Safety & Operational Coordination:

  • Work closely with ports, stevedores, vessels, and internal stakeholders to ensure safety standards are followed
  • Record and escalate safety incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts or conditions
  • Follow up on reported safety incidents until closure
  • Conduct safety audits of service providers where required
  • Promote a strong safety culture across port and vessel operations
  • Challenge and stop unsafe acts, behaviours, or conditions
  • Ensure compliance with global safety standards, policies, and operating procedures

People Management Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and oversight to team members to achieve productivity, quality, and operational objectives
  • Support employee onboarding, training, coaching, and development
  • Assist with staffing plans, work allocation, job rotation, and scheduling
  • Set performance objectives and provide regular feedback to team members
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Maintain effective communication within the team and across departments
  • Work with HR on employee engagement and retention initiatives

Requirements:

  • Graduate with relevant shipping experience involving dangerous cargo
  • 3–5 years of experience as a Dangerous Goods Approver / DG Specialist preferred
  • Strong domain knowledge of Container Line Operations
  • Thorough knowledge of the IMDG Code and CFR49
  • Understanding of vessel operations and container cargo handling
  • Strong knowledge of dangerous goods classification, documentation, segregation, and stowage requirements
  • Shipping or marine operations experience
  • 8+ years of overall shipping industry experience preferred
  • Customer service experience will be an added advantage
  • Knowledge of commercial, technical, and legal aspects of shipping operations and management
  • Familiarity with vessels, cargo types, trading regions, and break-bulk cargo preferred
  • Strong analytical, numerical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to learn and work with new operational systems quickly
  • Understanding of SAP and AutoCAD will be an advantage
  • Strong relationship-building and team management capabilities

The position is based in Chennai, India, within the Operations / Marine Operations & Cargo Care function. The role is highly focused on dangerous goods compliance and plays an important part in ensuring hazardous cargo is safely and correctly handled before being loaded onto vessels.
