Job Description

The Voyage Optimisation Manager will support and lead voyage optimisation activities from the Voyage Optimisation Centre in Mumbai, combining voyage economics, vessel performance, operational analysis, and maritime judgement to improve voyage results. The role will monitor live voyages, identify performance exceptions, challenge assumptions, and provide clear recommendations to Operations and Chartering.

Role Overview

The role covers voyage monitoring, vessel performance analysis, fuel efficiency, voyage economics, exception management, and operational decision support. Depending on experience, the position will also take ownership of optimisation quality for assigned voyages or fleets, lead complex cases, improve analytical processes, and support the development of junior team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor assigned voyages and fleets across vessel speed, fuel consumption, port calls, delays, weather impact, and operational exceptions.
  • Validate vessel-reported information and identify gaps between planned and actual voyage performance.
  • Investigate performance deviations, identify patterns, challenge assumptions, and determine potential causes.
  • Assess voyage economics, vessel performance, fuel consumption, and operational risks to identify optimisation opportunities.
  • Provide clear and timely recommendations to Operations and Chartering teams.
  • Raise risks and performance exceptions early to enable timely operational action.
  • Lead complex or high-impact optimisation cases and coordinate relevant stakeholders before action is taken.
  • Support efforts to protect earnings, reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, and improve voyage results.
  • Support reviews related to speed and consumption compliance, hull inspections, and chartered-in vessel performance.
  • Use voyage optimisation systems, dashboards, analytics, reports, and AI-enabled decision-support tools effectively.
  • Improve analytical methods, dashboards, automation, reporting standards, checklists, and repeatable working processes.
  • Support the development and adoption of AI-enabled tools for voyage optimisation and performance analysis.
  • Collaborate with Masters, vessel operators, chartering managers, and performance teams across global offices.
  • Maintain accurate voyage records, performance reports, escalation notes, and shift handovers.
  • Work on a rotating 24/7 shift pattern, including nights and weekends, with appropriate escalation and handover.
  • Review work quality and, where applicable, mentor junior colleagues and support consistent decision-making across the team.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in voyage economics, fuel efficiency, operational performance, and optimisation processes.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in shipping operations, voyage management, vessel performance, marine operations, or a related maritime function for the Manager-level position.
  • Experience in a senior, lead, or decision-making capacity preferred.
  • Candidates with experience as a senior vessel operator, senior voyage/performance analyst, or former sailing officer with relevant shore-based experience will be preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of voyage economics, vessel speed performance, fuel consumption, and operational risk.
  • Working knowledge of maritime operations and voyage execution.
  • Ability to analyse voyage and vessel performance data and identify meaningful deviations.
  • Ability to make sound and timely recommendations using incomplete or conflicting information.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate findings, recommendations, risks, and confidence levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience with reporting tools, dashboards, analytics, automation, or AI-enabled maritime tools.
  • Ability to improve analytical processes and establish consistent reporting and quality standards.
  • Maritime, engineering, commercial, or other relevant qualification preferred.

About the Role

This combined role is suitable for maritime professionals ranging from experienced voyage optimisation specialists to senior vessel operators, performance analysts, and sailing officers with relevant shore-based exposure. The position combines voyage performance, vessel analytics, fuel optimisation, voyage economics, and operational decision-making, with opportunities to take increasing ownership of complex optimisation cases and team quality.
